The classification system was originally established by the church, the best grapes defined as from the top of the slopes, with fruit for the villagers predictably down the hill a bit. Inheritance laws have seen the vineyards divided into smaller and smaller family parcels, and within a sea of small producers, it is not uncommon for a single vineyard to have numerous owners.
